Flo-Co Furnaces: The Vintage History of Floral City Heater Company

In the golden era of American home heating, Flo-Co stood out as a trusted and innovative brand. Manufactured by the Floral City Heater Company, Flo-Co specialized in oil, gas, and coal furnaces, offering homeowners a reliable path through the evolution of domestic heating in the mid-20th century.

Based in Monroe, Michigan, Flo-Co designed products built to last. From their sleek oil furnaces to the rugged, rounded coal-burning units, Flo-Co merged form, function, and affordability. They even ventured into early climate control solutions with the Gas Mizer Air Conditioning Unit, showcasing their forward-thinking approach.

One of their standout offerings was the “Midget Gas or Oil Hiboy”, a compact unit ideal for smaller homes or basements with tight clearance. With a strong emphasis on quality, every product came “Manufactured and Guaranteed by Floral City Heater Company,” a promise that held weight during a time when American households were transitioning from coal to cleaner-burning fuels like gas and oil.

The gravity “octopus” furnace plating that featured their logo would’ve looked similar to (Fig. A). As time had progressed and they moved into automatic furnaces without the use of coal, their furnaces and whole air conditioning units would have two distinct patterns to represent (Fig. B) was the intro of their Hi-Boys and (Fig. C) was the intro to their air conditioning lineup. They also came with one other design which was the Grayline (Fig. D) which replaced their Midget Gas lineup and came in both metal and plastic.

While the brand eventually faded from the marketplace during the heating industry consolidations of the 1960s and 70s, Flo-Co’s bold red-and-blue branding and their iconic matchbook ads, like the one seen here, continue to be a nostalgic reminder of a hands-on era in American HVAC history. A matchbook of the branding they used during this time can be found below (Fig. E).
